Your City Hall just greenlit big changes for Canada Place

Your city hall just gave Canada Place a big green light

Alright, Vancouver. Hope you got some decent sleep, maybe caught a sunrise over the North Shore mountains. Because while you were doing that, some things were moving at City Hall.

On April 14th, the Council approved a significant text amendment for the Canada Place area — specifically 1055-1085 Canada Place and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Road. This was a public hearing, and it passed with a pretty strong showing of 'In Favour' votes.

Here’s who supported it: * Councillor L. Dominato * Councillor P. Fry * Councillor B. Montague * Councillor M. Klassen

Councillor R. Bligh was marked as Absent, but the decision still carried. What this means, practically, is more flexibility for development and changes in one of Vancouver's most iconic waterfront locations. It’s a prime piece of real estate, obviously, so any adjustments there tend to ripple out.

Then, separately, we saw some interesting movement on the housing front. Two new building permits were issued on April 20th for "multiplex" developments on Dundas Street – 2552 Dundas Street for $500,000 and 2554 Dundas Street for $700,000. These are lower-density, but they're still adding units. It's a small step, a drop in the bucket really, but it's something to watch as the city tries to figure out how to squeeze more living spaces into existing neighbourhoods.

Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.
