Your council just changed Vancouver's waterfront. Are you ready?

Your council just voted on that waterfront project

Good morning, Vancouver. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

Council made a pretty significant move on April 14th, approving the CD-1 (363) Text Amendment for a big chunk of waterfront real estate down by Canada Place. We're talking 1055-1085 Canada Place and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Road. Councillor L Dominato voted in favour, and the measure carried. This kind of amendment often allows for changes to what can be built or how a space can be used in a specific area, so it's a big deal for the city's skyline and public access to those iconic views.

Then, just last week, on April 21st, there was a unanimous council vote regarding a business licence for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. Councillors B Montague, L Zhou, and S Orr all voted in favour. Councillor R Bligh was absent. It's a small detail, maybe, but these individual decisions on short-term rentals stack up, and they speak to the ongoing tension between property use and our housing crunch.

It's a balance, isn't it? Building up our international profile versus the everyday reality of living here. We'll have to watch how these waterfront changes unfold, especially what they mean for the public space along the seawall, and how the city continues to navigate the complexities of short-term rentals.
