Your City Hall just okayed another short-term rental.

Vancouver City Council was busy last week, and one item on the agenda really caught my eye. On April 21, the Special Council approved Business Licence Application No. AL0188353 for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. Councillor B. Montague and L. Zhou, and S. Orr voted in favor, and it passed unanimously, even with Councillor R. Bligh absent.

It's one of those decisions that feels like a microcosm of the city right now. We're talking about a rental in a residential building, which, you know, affects the housing supply. Every time one of these passes, it chips away at the places people can actually live, long-term.

Meanwhile, new building permits from May 8 show a laneway house going up on Sherbrooke Street for $646,455, and a 1924 single-detached house on West 18th Avenue getting demolished. It paints a picture, doesn't it? Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

What does this mean for us? We'll see if the city's approach to short-term rentals shifts, or if this is just business as usual. Keep an eye on those permits; they tell a story about who gets to stay, and what kind of Vancouver we're building.
