Your city just said yes to more short-term rentals.

Your City Hall says 'yes' to more short-term rentals.

It’s been a beautiful week out there, hasn't it? Clear skies. You can actually see the mountains from the Skytrain, which is always a pleasant surprise. But inside City Hall, things remain… complicated.

There was a Special Council meeting on April 21st, and the big takeaway, for me anyway, was the unanimous approval of Business Licence Application No. AL0188353. This was for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. According to the council voting records, Councillors B Montague, L Zhou, and S Orr all voted in favour. Councillor R Bligh was absent, but the decision still carried unanimously among those present.

This isn't just a single permit. It reflects a wider pattern. We've been wrestling with housing affordability for so long that watching the city approve more short-term rentals, even just one, feels a bit like… *shikata ga nai* – it can’t be helped, but you still feel it. With housing prices still climbing and the vacancy rate what it is, every unit counts.

What does this mean for us? Well, it means the city is continuing to greenlight these operations. It's a small decision, but it contributes to the larger picture of how Vancouver manages its housing supply. Keep an eye on the next public hearings for more of these applications.

Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.
