They're tearing down more Vancouver Specials
It’s June, and the sun is finally making a regular appearance. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast. And as the light stretches out longer, we're seeing some familiar patterns emerge from City Hall’s recent permits.
According to the issued building permits from June 1st, Vancouver is losing two more single-detached houses to demolition. Specifically, at 4003 West 19th Avenue, a 1927 house is being demolished for $40,000. And over at 670 West 20th Avenue, a 1960 house is also slated for demolition, costing $40,000. These aren't just old houses; these are often the Vancouver Specials or their predecessors—structures built to withstand the rain and hold families, not just investment portfolios.

What does this mean for us? Well, these aren't just buildings. They're part of the city's fabric, offering a certain kind of attainable housing, however modest, in neighbourhoods that are increasingly out of reach. When you see these permits, it's not just about a house coming down; it's about what goes up in its place, and who gets to live there. Will it be another expensive build, or something that truly serves Vancouverites? We’ll be watching.
