Your council is making short-term rental decisions
Alright, so there's a small but interesting detail popping up from the April 21st Special Council meeting you should know about. Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to approve a Business Licence Application (AL0188353) for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street.
Now, on the surface, this looks like just another routine approval. Councillors B. Montague, L. Zhou, and S. Orr all voted in favour. What's notable is that Councillor R. Bligh was marked as "Absent" for this vote, as recorded in the recent Council Votes data. This isn't a huge earth-shattering development, but it highlights how these granular decisions are being made, even as the larger conversation around short-term rentals and housing availability continues to simmer across the city. Each one of these approvals is a tiny thread in the larger fabric of our housing reality.
Also, it looks like there's been a burst of building permits issued on June 12th. Five permits went out, including a significant $3.8 million interior alteration at 108 E 5th Avenue to divide existing office space into two units. And then, two duplexes, valued at $759,675 and $690,000, are slated for construction at 2746 W 41st Avenue and 5395 Earles Street, respectively. It’s a mix, but the office space conversion is something to keep an eye on, as it speaks to the shifting landscape of commercial and residential use downtown.
Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.
