Your short-term rental rules just got a little tighter
Alright, Vancouver. It’s quiet out there this morning, a little hazy over the North Shore mountains, which means it’ll probably burn off by lunch. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.
Over at City Hall, a small but notable detail from the April 21st Special Council meeting came across the wire. Council approved Business Licence Application No. AL0188353 for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. The interesting part? It was carried unanimously by the councillors present. Councillor R. Bligh was marked absent, but Councillors B. Montague, L. Zhou, and S. Orr all voted in favour.
This might seem like just another permit, but it’s a specific example of City Hall continuing to greenlight individual short-term rental operations even as the province ramps up its own regulations. The Columbia Street location is in a high-density area, near the Cambie Village SkyTrain station. With housing affordability being… what it is… every decision on these types of permits adds up. It’s a bit like watching individual drops fill a bucket when you know the tap is still running somewhere else.
What this means is, despite the bigger picture conversations, these applications are still being processed and approved. It's a reminder to watch how these specific approvals align with the broader housing strategy. Are we seeing consistency? Or are we just ticking boxes?
