Your next landlord could be a short-term rental giant
Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.
It seems like every time you blink, another piece of Vancouver changes, doesn't it? The city council just gave unanimous approval on April 21, 2026, to a business license application (No. AL0188353) for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. Councillors B. Montague, L. Zhou, and S. Orr all voted in favour. Councillor R. Bligh was absent for this vote, as well as the CD-1 text amendment public hearing on April 14 for 1055-1085 Canada Place.
This is more than just one condo; it's a trend. We're talking about a system that increasingly favours turning residential units into de facto hotels, chipping away at the already scarce long-term rental market. When you see a permit issued for a million-dollar mechanical upgrade at 1560 E 4th Avenue, or a $300,000 interior alteration on Cambie Street, you have to wonder: is this for someone building a home, or someone building an investment portfolio? The market is already tight, and every unit that goes to short-term rental means one less place for someone trying to actually live here, trying to afford their daily grind, maybe even trying to raise a family. What does that do to the fabric of a neighbourhood, when the faces around you are constantly changing?
We'll be watching how these approvals continue to stack up, and what impact they really have on the rental landscape.
