Your property taxes are going up and that ain't right
Winterpeg. We built a city in the coldest place anyone has any business building a city — and it is genuinely wonderful. Good morning.
Okay, so I just saw this headline that says Manitoba tied for the highest inflation rate in Canada, hey? And the big kicker, the thing that really gets under my skin, is that rising food costs and property taxes are right up there as the main reasons. I mean, we’re already paying some of the highest property taxes in the country, and now this? It feels like we're always fighting an uphill battle here, just to keep our heads above water.
### What This Means for Winnipeg
It’s not just some abstract number that the economists are talking about. This hits right where we live, literally.
* **Your Groceries:** Those trips to the Superstore on Pembina Highway, or even just picking up some fresh bannock at the North End market? The prices are just getting wild, hey. It makes it harder for families, for kokums, for young people just starting out. * **Your Home:** Property taxes affect everyone, from the bungalows in St. James to the Exchange District lofts. It’s a huge chunk of our budgets, and when it keeps climbing, it means less money for everything else — for taking the kids to The Forks, for a night out in Osborne Village, for supporting local artists. * **Our City's Vibe:** When people are constantly stressed about making ends meet, it changes the whole feeling of the city. We pride ourselves on our community spirit, on looking out for each other. But it’s hard to do that when everyone’s feeling the squeeze so tight.
I just feel like we're working so hard, and it just keeps getting tougher to keep up. We deserve better than to always be at the top of the list for inflation. We’re a resilient city, we always find a way, but sometimes you just gotta say, "Come on now, this is too much."
