We're seeing a lot of change on the ground here in Winnipeg, and not just the weather finally warming up. The City's real-time monitor, updated today at 12:05 PM on May 5, 2026, shows a significant number of demolition permits issued just this past week. We’re talking about **ten** permits to tear down existing structures across the city between April 29 and April 30.
For instance, homes at 65 Berrydale Avenue in St. Vital and 606 Oak Street in Central River Heights (River Heights - Fort Garry ward) are coming down, according to permits issued on April 30. Over in the North End, a property at 491 Burrows Avenue in William Whyte (Mynarski ward) also received a demolition permit on April 30. This kind of activity points to some big shifts in our neighbourhoods, making way for... well, that's the question, isn't it, hey?
On the development side, a new gas kiosk is slated for construction by CTM Design Services at 500 Oak Point Highway in the Point Douglas ward, with a permit issued on April 29. While we're seeing these structures come down, the City's development trend data indicates only 15 new housing units were permitted across 34 projects this week. That's a lot of tearing down for fewer new homes, hey. It makes you wonder what kind of city we're building.
