We just couldn’t close it out last night
It was a tough one at Nationwide Arena for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who fell to the Carolina Hurricanes by a score of 5-2. After a scoreless first period that saw both teams trading chances, things got a little wild in the second. Seth Gostisbehere got the Hurricanes on the board first with a power play goal, and then just a few minutes later, Lleyton Stankoven doubled their lead, also on the power play. Our guys showed some life when Kirill Marchenko netted one late in the second, assisted by Zach Werenski and Mathieu Marchment, really getting the crowd going.
The third period started with a bang for Columbus, with Adam Fantilli scoring early, again assisted by Mathieu Marchment and Kirill Marchenko, making it a one-goal game and giving us all that surge of hope. But the Hurricanes answered back strong. Nikolaj Ehlers found the net, and then Andrei Svechnikov extended their lead on another power play. The dagger came late with Jordan Martinook scoring shorthanded, just a tough pill to swallow. Daniil Tarasov faced 31 shots, making 25 saves, but the power play for Carolina was just too much to handle.
This loss drops the Columbus Blue Jackets to 38-25-12, keeping them at 88 points and holding onto that Wildcard #2 spot in the Metropolitan Division. With a 5-4-1 record in their last ten, we need to regroup quickly. The standings are tight, and every point matters, especially with some tough matchups ahead. It’s a quiet morning at Buckeye Donuts on High Street, but our Blue Jackets have to shake this off and focus on the next one. We’re still in this, but we need to start turning these close games into wins.
