Montreal Canadiens Game Recap: MTL 1, DET 3

Your Habs let one slip away in Detroit, tabarnac.

You wake up this morning, and it feels like someone stole your last St-Viateur bagel right off the counter, non? The Montreal Canadiens were in Detroit last night, and they just couldn't seal the deal, falling 3-1 to the Red Wings. We had Juraj Slafkovský, bless his heart, put us up 1-0 in the second period on the power play, assisted by Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki. It felt good, you know? Like maybe we could actually take this one. But then the third period started, and it all went south. J. Compher tied it up early for Detroit, and then A. DeBrincat scored the winner with just over three minutes left. And just for good measure, A. Copp rubbed salt in the wound with an empty-netter. C’est plate, ça.

The shots were 33-28 in our favour, which just makes it sting even more. We *dominated* parts of that game, but couldn't put the puck in the net when it mattered. It's the kind of loss that makes you want to go down to La Banquise and just drown your sorrows in poutine, even if it's too early for dinner. This wasn't just another game, it was a chance to build some momentum, and now we’re on a losing streak again. We’re still third in the Atlantic with 84 points, but these are the games you *need* to win if you want to be taken seriously at the Bell Centre, where hockey comes to be serious again.

What does it mean for the Montreal Canadiens moving forward? It means we need to find that killer instinct, that *grinta*, that separates the contenders from the teams just trying to keep their heads above water. We're 5-4-1 in our last ten, which isn't terrible, but it’s not championship hockey, either. We can’t afford to let these close games slip away. Every point is crucial now, and letting Detroit walk away with two points when we played well enough to get at least one, maybe even two, is just unacceptable. This team, this city, deserves more.

Allez Les Canadiens — Go Habs Go. This is Amélie Boisvert.

My buddy Pascal and the crew, they're ripping into this every morning. Catch them live at mornings.live.
