Your Canadiens played like they were still sleeping
Morning, Montreal. If you woke up hoping last night was just a bad dream, I'm sorry to tell you it was real. The Montreal Canadiens went down 3-0 against the New Jersey Devils right here at the Bell Centre. It was a brutal shutout, a real kick in the gut after the run we've been on. For those who didn't stay up late enough to watch the whole thing, trust me, you didn't miss much in terms of excitement from our boys. It was one of those nights where the puck just wouldn't go in, and the Devils, well, they made sure theirs did.
The Devils got on the board early in the first period, Timo Meier at 10:47, and from then on, it felt like we were chasing. The Montreal Canadiens only managed 20 shots all game; the Devils had 18, so it’s not like they dominated us on paper, but on the scoreboard, it's a different story. Then, C. Glass got one past us in the second period, and when C. Brown sealed it in the third, tabarnac, it was over. You could feel the air just go out of the building. It’s hard to watch when the effort seems to be there but the finish is just… not.
What does this mean for the Montreal Canadiens? We're still sitting pretty at 45-22-10 with 100 points, third in the Atlantic, but losing like this at home, especially after going 8-2-0 in our last ten, it just stings. It's a wake-up call, maybe. You can't just coast, especially not when the playoffs are on the horizon. We need to regroup, put this behind us, and remember what got us those 100 points. The mood in Montreal this morning? Probably a bit like my bagel from St-Viateur — good, but a little tough around the edges after last night.
