Your taxes are building a $1.9M house in the Glebe.

Big house in the Glebe? Your taxes are building it.

Okay, so I’m looking at the City Hall permits, and the first thing that just *jumps* out at you is this single-storey detached dwelling going up at 56 Inglewood Drive in Ward 1. The permit, BP 9NEW 25-9888, is for a cool $1,910,124. That’s not a typo, mon ami, almost two million dollars for *one* house.

Now, compare that to the solar panel installation on Tomken Road in Ward 5, which is a sensible $88,920. Or even the interior alterations for Co-operators Insurance on Standish Court, which is a substantial $1,916,140, but that’s a whole commercial building, not just one residence.

This Inglewood build is a prime example of the kind of high-value residential development we’re seeing in established, desirable neighbourhoods. It’s a sign of where the real estate market is still pushing, even as we talk about housing affordability. While other parts of the city are dealing with proposals for apartment buildings, like the one for 1970 and 1980 Fowler Drive in Ward 8, the Glebe is still getting these luxury detached homes.

The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it.
