Your City Hall is building something big and expensive
Morning, Ottawa. Hope you had your double-double. We’ve been watching the issued building permits from City Hall, and one number just jumps out at you, like a report that slipped through three levels of approval.
A new two-storey detached dwelling, with a finished basement and walkout, is being built at 865 Aviation Road in Ward 1. The permit, BP 9NEW 24-5505, clocks in at a hefty $2,066,986. That's a serious investment in a single residential home. While the City isn’t footing the bill directly, this kind of valuation for a new build is a strong signal about the high-end residential market in our city.
On the commercial side, Tim Hortons at 780 Bancroft Drive in Ward 11 is getting a recladding for its drive-thru window (Permit #BP 3ALT 26-430), a comparatively modest $84,619. Even the biggest coffee chain in the country needs a little refresh, eh?
The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it. This residential build shows that even with all the talk about affordable housing, the luxury market is still very much in play. We’ll be watching to see how this trend evolves and if more high-value residential permits start popping up across the 613.
