Your Penguins didn't mess around last night against the Flyers
Yinz probably woke up with that taste in your mouth, that good feeling only a Penguins win can give ya, especially against *them*. The Pittsburgh Penguins took down the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 right here in the Igloo, and believe me, it was earned. Erik Soderblom got us on the board early in the first, setting the tone like a good Iron City brew. Then, in the second, things got a little wild, like a Mount Washington incline car with a jagoff at the controls.
That second period was something else. Drew O'Connor put us up 2-0 early on a beauty set up by Sidney Crosby — who else? But then the Flyers, those jagoffs, clawed their way back. First, Adam Bump, then Travis Sanheim, tying it up and making my Primanti's sandwich feel a little less satisfying. But then, the captain, Kris Letang, stepped up with another assist from Crosby, potting the game-winner. That's the grit we expect, the kind that built this city. Twenty shots for us, twenty-one for them — tight as a bug in a rug, but we got the job done.
This win, against *them*, means everything for the Pittsburgh Penguins right now. We're sitting at 41-25-16, still second in the Metro. That two-point swing against a rival keeps the pressure on, reminds everyone we ain't going nowhere. After a tough stretch, getting a W, especially a hard-fought one against those Flyers, is like a shot in the arm. It reminds us what we’re made of. The city feels a little lighter today, a little more like the best view in hockey geography from up on the overlook.
