A Point Douglas fire and five new spots you need to know about

South Point Douglas had an early morning fire, hey.

Winterpeg. We built a city in the coldest place anyone has any business building a city — and it is genuinely wonderful. Good morning.

Before we get into the City Hall stuff, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a structure fire in South Point Douglas early this morning. WFPS dispatch records show incident 2026044975 was reported at 5:33:11 AM on March 27, 2026, in the Point Douglas ward. Units D3, E102, E104, E2, L1, and R6 were on scene, and the incident was resolved by 5:56:09 AM. Good to know our crews are always on it, hey.

### New Eateries and Council Perks

On the City Hall beat, there are five new liquor license applications posted this week, showing some fresh spots might be popping up around the city. Keep an eye out for House of Ma’s, The Highwater Bar, John’s Fusion Kitchen, BarBurrito Fresh Mexican Grill, and Venetian Nail Spa. It’s always good to see new businesses looking to set up shop here, hey.

And hey, a little peek at what our council members are getting. John Orlikow received two tickets, valued at $140 total, from the WSO on November 13, 2025, for "Organization's Outreach." Also, Mayor Scott Gillingham was gifted a "Plaque with blown glass dragon" from the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre on October 28, 2025, for being named "Golden Dragon Citizen of the year." It's good to see our leaders being recognized for their work, and the transparency about these gifts is important for us to see what's happening.
