Hey, your yard might be the city's biggest problem
Winterpeg. We built a city in the coldest place anyone has any business building a city — and it is genuinely wonderful. Good morning.
Alright, let's talk about what's happening at City Hall, hey. It looks like the biggest complaint to 311 right now isn't about potholes or transit, it's about overgrown yards.
### Tall Grass Takedown
According to the latest 311 data, "Housing Complaint - Long Grass/Weeds_vof" is the top issue today, with 8 calls in the last 24 hours. That's out of 20 total 311 requests in that same timeframe. It means people are really noticing those unkempt properties out there. We're past the spring thaw, and things are really growing now, so it makes sense that this would start to pop up, hey. Property standards are always a big deal when the grass gets going.
### Business Beat
On the business front, our real-time monitor shows there have been 50 business closures across the city in the past month. Daniel McIntyre and Lord Selkirk Park wards each saw 4 of those closures. But it's not all shutdowns; the city also posted 6 new liquor license applications this week, including "Friendly's Grocery Co-op," "The Pizza Plate," and "Taste of Sri Lanka." We also saw 3 new business licenses issued in the past two weeks. So, a bit of a mixed bag there, hey, some places closing, but new ones are still looking to open up and feed us.
Keep an eye on those tall grass complaints as we head further into summer. It'll be interesting to see if the city ramps up bylaw enforcement to tackle it.
